As any capital city anywhere in the world, BEIJING with its wide boulevards, monumental architecture and high-rise hotels is strikingly different from the rest of China. After several days of sightseeing, we felt that we're only seeing beautiful facades, far removed from the real Beijing life - yes, the Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian temples are stunning, but they look devoid of life, since there're no monks and no ceremonies; the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace are impressive, but overrun by tourists and hustlers. Skipping on the Chairmen Mao's mausoleum and the reconstructed sections of the Great Wall, we got our dose of reality at the Panjiayuan market and then climbing the Wild Wall and exploring some tiny villages nearby.
